It was decent. Good, in fact. It just didn't really leave me really wanting more. I mean, I want to know what happens next, but not that urgent. The author is great with details, but maybe a little too much? Do we really have to know that Min DROPPED her chop 'o sticks, PICK the up, and bonk her head? Wouldn't it be easier to say 'I took some time to get my utensils' or something? Do we really need to know at all? Can we skip the conversation in the first place? The conversation was interesting enough, but I don't think we need THAT much information. For like, 75% of the book, Min is posing as a dead soldier still thought alive, for NO reason!! 'You sacrificed your life for me! I help you!' and the ghost of the dead soldier is like 'Ok! If you fail…I HAUGHT YOU FOREVER. MUAHAHA!' Ehm. Ok…(…(……)……)……(………(…………)…(………)…)… -_-
I understand that Min was on the battle cruiser the Pale Lightining for a long time, but do we actually have to hear her talk about scrubbing toilets so precisely for like 10% of the book? I little bit easier on the side stuff and more on the juicy steak you know! I don't know why the ghosts didn't savagely attack Min, Hanuel, and the goblin (I can't remember her name! It's on the tip of my tongue, but I can't remember!). Maybe because of Jun is with them? Maybe the ghosts sense something different? Maybe there is an aura that's different about Min than others? Will there be answers? Why am I so confused? I don't…know?(??(??(??)????)?)??(????)
I loved the author's craft, however. It's a perfect blend of sci-fi, Korean mythology, and a young child's struggle against the world of the unknown. I would reccomend it, but it's sometimes reeeeeeeeeeeeeally slow, while such at times, it goes veeery quickly. It all comes together and it's all a happy ending. Meow!

Peace out, and wear your seatbelt!

Dragon Pearl Rick Riordan Presents Yoon Ha Lee 9781368013352 Books Reviews

Min’s family of supernatural, shapeshifting foxes lives on Jinju, an outer rim planet that just wasn’t able to be fully terraformed. Min and her family stay in human form the majority of the time, and use their taboo abilities sparingly. Her brother escaped the dusty confines of their home by joining the Thousand Worlds Space Forces, but tragedy strikes the family when a rep from the Force reports that Jin has deserted. He’s accused of going AWOL to seek out the dragon pearl, an orb with the fantastic power to turn any barren planet habitable. Min takes off to look for brother and save the family’s reputation. Dragon Pearl is an enjoyable middle-grade deep space adventure that draws its uniqueness from fantasy and magical elements inspired by Korean culture.

Yoon Ha Lee pulls from Korean language, food, symbolic numbers and colors, and the nature of gi.  Dragon Pearl definitely has some of the usual cool science fiction elements dirty space ports, star ship battles, and cadet training (and maybe a quick nod to another hero who had to get off his planet). But draw of this one is in the Min's connection to her family's roots on Jinjui, and her undying faith in her brother. She must get her feet dirty several times in order to find the answers to all her questions, and there is some real depth that is developed in her character.

Dragon Pearl is a good choice for any kid wanting to get that first taste of science fiction. It features positive decision making, balanced friendships, and a protagonist who is a solid role model. Recommended.
Audiobook is great also!
At first fast delivery thanks also interesting story..I liked it
Dragon Pearl will appeal to kids who love stories with magic, adventure, or space travel. Fast paced and full of surprises, this story will be a big hit with the middle grade readers!
A great book, it was hard for me to put it down. Lee is a great writer and is descriptive and very clever. I don’t think it’s a series which makes me sad, but it’s great nonetheless!
Another lovely journey from YHL.
A delightful and resourceful young girl has an amazing adventure in the Stars to find out the truth about her brother listed as MIA (deserted) from the space force.
I really liked the book. It is a fun book and I could not let go of it. None of your predictions come true. The book is full of surprises. It always makes you curious about what is going to happen next. The end is kind of sad. If you like Rick Riordan books, you will enjoy this one too. I hope there will be more of the Rick Rioardan Presents Series. I would recommend the book to everyone who has time to read it.
