Little Comfort A Hester Thursby Mystery Edwin Hill Books
This is a fast-paced thriller set in Boston, Somerville and New Hampshire. Harvard librarian Hester Thursby is on leave, caring for the 3 year old daughter of her best friend Daphne (who has a habit of disappearing for days, weeks and months at a time). Hester maintains her side business of finding lost people - including some that will go to any length not to be found. The author does a great job with describing both settings and characters. Everyone in the book is flawed, and makes questionable decisions - just like in the real world. I had trouble putting this one down, and can't wait for the next book in the series!Tags : Amazon.com: Little Comfort (A Hester Thursby Mystery) (9781496715906): Edwin Hill: Books,Edwin Hill,Little Comfort (A Hester Thursby Mystery),Kensington,149671590X,Mystery & Detective - General,Mystery & Detective - Police Procedural,Psychological,Academic librarians,Cambridge (Mass.),Detective and mystery fiction,Harvard College Library,Missing persons - Investigation,Missing persons;Investigation;Fiction.,Research librarians,Swindlers and swindling,Swindlers and swindling;Fiction.,Women librarians,Women librarians;Fiction.,AMERICAN MYSTERY & SUSPENSE FICTION,FICTION Mystery & Detective General,FICTION Mystery & Detective Police Procedural,FICTION Mystery & Detective Women Sleuths,FICTION Psychological,FICTION Thrillers Crime,Fiction,Fiction-Mystery & Detective,FictionMystery & Detective - Police Procedural,FictionMystery & Detective - Women Sleuths,FictionPsychological,FictionThrillers - Crime,GENERAL,General Adult,Harvard College Library,Massachusetts,Missing persons - Investigation,Missing persons;Investigation;Fiction.,Monograph Series, 1st,Mystery & Detective - General,Mystery & Detective - Police Procedural,MysterySuspense,Psychological,Research librarians,Swindlers and swindling,Swindlers and swindling;Fiction.,United States,Women librarians,Women librarians;Fiction.,mystery; mystery thriller suspense; mystery books; crime books; mystery and thrillers; mystery and suspense; mystery novels; detective novels; fiction; mysteries; fiction books; murder mystery books; mysteries and thrillers; fiction psychological; crime; thriller; crime fiction; suspense; police procedural; murder; detective; thrillers; police; england; crime thriller; murder mystery; thriller books; noir; historical; historical mystery; mystery series; serial killer; psychological thriller; forensics; contemporary fiction, mystery;thriller;crime;thrillers;suspense;thriller books;mystery books;crime fiction;women sleuths;mystery and thrillers;police;mystery and suspense;crime books;suspense books;murder mystery books;detective novels;mystery novels;suspense thriller books;mysteries and thrillers;fiction;novels;mysteries;fiction books;cozy mysteries women sleuths series;books fiction;books mystery;crime novels;mystery thriller suspense;women sleuths mysteries;fiction psychological;mystery and thriller,FICTION Mystery & Detective General,FICTION Mystery & Detective Police Procedural,FICTION Mystery & Detective Women Sleuths,FICTION Psychological,FICTION Thrillers Crime,FictionMystery & Detective - Police Procedural,FictionMystery & Detective - Women Sleuths,FictionPsychological,FictionThrillers - Crime,Fiction,MysterySuspense
Little Comfort A Hester Thursby Mystery Edwin Hill Books Reviews
The sample lured me in by focusing on Hester Thursby, a flawed, caring, funny character who I immediately warmed to. But when I downloaded the book it almost immediately thrust me into the mindsets of not one, but two dark, twisted men. There was some unsavory connection between them that I would've had to read farther to learn. Perhaps Hester's humanity was supposed to offset the ominous perversion of the men, but I didn't want to live in their heads any longer, so I stopped reading.
For Mr. Hill’s first effort, he hit it out of the ballpark. The characters are realistically funny in a relatable and human way, and the story moves along compellingly. I couldn’t wait to read the next chapter. It was one of those reads where you slow down towards the end because you just don’t want to let go of the story. Loved the twists and turns. I’m looking forward to the next in the series!
I love when a book evokes a location so strongly that you “see” it when you’re on the subway. Boston and New Hampshire are 2 favorite places for this New England—phile so I settled right into this book. The descriptions of place were vivid and familiar and, yes, comforting. The story is deeper than a typical crime thriller. It has psychological and sociological twists and turns that make it much more emotionally satisfying than most books in this genre. I couldn’t put it down. This New Yorker missed the downtown express to Brooklyn at Chambers Street and ended back uptown at 34th Street. For those in the MTA know, that’s a good read. Lastly, the characters. So well formed. My heart bled for one murderer and my body shivered at another. And Hester Thursby. A fantastic name for a lasting character. She’s short and fierce and I love her. And I love her dog Waffles. I want to meet them. This book should be made into a film, STAT.
A chilling tale. While the reader can "see" just about all that is happening, the reader also sits helplessly as the victims never know what hit them. One mistake leads to another for two boys as they grow up the hard way. Nothing is as it appears to be for everyone involved!
Mysteries are not my go to genre but I knew I had to give this one a try. How often can you get in to a series with the first offering from an exciting new author? And now I can’t wait for the second installment!
I don’t live in Boston but have visited enough and with the well crafted descriptions of both setting and characters, the story was very familiar.
Hester is an endearing and enduring character. Her independence that was challenged by the new child in her life was extremely realistic. She is intrepid but feels the pull of new responsibility which makes the story more interesting.
The intertwining lives are believable as we are all familiar with the social climbers who are evident everywhere on social media. There are other ‘ripped from the headlines’ aspects of the story which are subtle and yet familiar.
This is a first time offering but is so well crafted you could mistake it for an opportunity to revisit familiar friends. Which we will all be doing with the future installments in this great
New series.
A few years ago I spent large portions of a vacation missing all the magnificent sites around me as I was unable to put down a book- well, “Little Comfort” did it to me again. I was thoroughly sucked in from the get go. Mystery-solving Hester and the characters around her are not to be missed - I hope more installments are on the way, and soon!
There's plenty of good reviews here to tell more about the story, so I won't get into that. The important thing to know is that, if you get into reading this book, you're going to need a block of time to finish it... you simply won't be able to put it down. And also, you may chew your fingernails off in the process.... Exciting storyline, great twists and turns, interesting characters, pleasant, flowing prose ... an all-around great read!!!!
